Default What tree please?

This mystery tree has captivated me for some years. With its beautiful colorful leaves in the fall, and the heart shaped leaves give this tree character.

Definitely looks like Katsura, or Cercidiphyllum japonicum.

Pretty lovely tree I might say...!

I was thinking redbud, Cercis canadensis L., which was reinforced by the location (thus I was deferring to treeshaveneeds in Toronto), but suspected something wasn't quite right starting with the lack of seed pods. With the identification as katsura it is now obvious: besides no seed pods the twigs are straight rather than slightly zigzagged, and the smaller than expected leaves are opposite (although this is the hardest to tell in the photos).

I also thought of Cercis, however, like you said, the missing zigzag growth habit and lack of seed pods was a clue. Also I tend to find that the venation in Cercis is more pronounced during autumnal leaf colouration - from what I've seen anyway!

Glad you were able to identify the tree as katsura - I have only ever seen one, a small one at that -- and never thought of it as a possibility, You must have really good vision Eden Keeper to tell that those leaves are opposite.
