Anyone have any idea what this is? I saw it in a japanese garden. Looks initially like vine growing up a tree but is actually leaves growing off the tree itself. Thanks

Looks like Agathis robusta or one of them Araucariaceae

wow -- quick and accurate response! I do believe you're right! really hard to find a matching picture on the net - but that this indeed the Agathis robusta or "Queensland (or Australian) Kauri". There's a very similar Agathis australis which is actually indeginous to NZ, often confusion between the two.
