What is this tree?

Anyone have any idea what this is? I saw it in a japanese garden. Looks initially like vine growing up a tree but is actually leaves growing off the tree itself. Thanks

Looks like Agathis robusta or one of them Araucariaceae

I do believe you're right! really hard to find a matching picture on the net - but that this indeed the Agathis robusta or "Queensland (or Australian) Kauri".

The picture i had was a young one; they grow into this:

the irony of that one is that it is in auckland, new zealand, I think?. damn them and there fertile country. great specimen though.

There's a very similar Agathis australis which is actually indeginous to NZ, often confusion between the two.
