It has 4 stages of shed. Small white flowers in Spring (the bees love it), then a small green pod (about the size of a sesame seed) with a stem, then in early Fall a dark purple (almost black), pea sized solid "fruit" with a pit. The berry is not mushy but when you step on it it leaves a mark. The leaves drop in winter. The branches are droopy but not weeping. Nice canopy. It's about 20 yrs old and about 20'. We're in the Houston area so it's nice and hot and humid here. See pics

Blackgum, Nyssa sylvatica Marsh., fits the description with flowers, abortive fruit, and ripe fruit, but something didn't look right with the leaf shape (although it is within the possibility of variation) and what looks like spurs (a type of short twig that usually bears fruit), while the range is marginal. Another possibility is gum bully, Sideroxylon lanuginosum Michx., (the most likely bully in Texas) where some key differences include the possibility of thorns (not clear in the photo since branch tips were either hidden or out of the frame), a pointed tip on the fruit from a persistent style base (at least one seems apparent in the photo while the rest were turned the wrong way), milky sap (pinch off a leaf to see it), and the bark (flaky rather than blocky).
