The leaves are oval shaped with jagged edges and full of different colors in the fall. The tree is around 30 ft tall- the branches are similar to a live oak- the bark appears rough and peeling from the tree. I am including 2 pictures to help identify it. It seems like it may be a good hard wood. thank you! |

I agree, the bark looks like black cherry. However, without closer pictures of the buds/leaves, there's a chance it could be Ostrya virginiana (but it's probably black cherry). |

| Ostrya tends to have long thin blocky bark; Prunus serotina is usually blacker, with bark curling more top and bottom. Need some pics of the fruit -- but it looks a lot like Hawthorn - Crataegus sp. There are many varietes. Does the tree have any thorns?

The bark as first glance does look like black cherry, and black gum crossed my mind, but the prominent parallel secondary vein in the leaves eliminated those then after zooming in on the leaf margins and noticing a slight zigzag in the twig it became clear that cedar elm, Ulmus crassifolia Nutt., is the most likely species given the location mentioned relative to the ranges other elms and everything else suggested in all the replies.
