I have had a lot of experience with tree id, but this small tree/shrub has me puzzled. I was doing some wetland delineation for work and I came across a few patches of maybe 10 to 20 trees no more then 15' tall. the leaves are opposite like an ash tree, 5 to 7 leaflets. And the veins also bend to the tip of the leaf kinda like a dogwood. the bark is raised like an elm tree but not as soft or spongy. And it has a seed ball that is very tightly packed like sycamore fruit. This picture is from early fall, So the fruit has a reddish tint but normally it is green. No standing water but the water table is 18" below ground

Fruit looks a bit like Osage Orange Tree - Maclura pomifera Mulberry Family: Moraceae uncertain about wetland location, unless seeds dropped there and germinated.

I did some more research and i think its called a button bush. Below is a link that describes it pretty good. And its considered a wetland shrub. buttonbush |

Thanks Stratton - I've seen that bush around the lakes while canoeing - always wondered what it was,
