It's the time of year they are shedding bark, makes it tougher. No caps eh.

Nah, none that I could find... Leaving in 15, just putting on the finishing touches, just going to have go with Eucalyptus spp. and hope I don't get scrutinized too much in the preliminary... Got a week for the final.. Hopefully by then I will have it ID'd

Probably one of the box type ones, you know, gum topped box, yellow box etc.

John, I have know idea. Do you get Eucalyptus viminalis var cygnetensis or Eucalytus albens in your area? Failing this I would try Dean. Curriculum Vitae Dean Nicolle ![]() ![]()

maybe some species of angophra ? i would guess a Eucalyptus saligna Sydney blue gum due mainly to the trees bark type , habit and general form.. My next guess is not a Euc. at all but an Angophora. possibly costata due again to the trees growth habit, bark persistance and most importantly what appears to be a parralell leaf venation seen in the image

Nah, not grey box - definately. Many other in the park... This brown sock cover the WHOLE tree to the tips of the branches... Not angophora as the leaves aren't opposite.. Will have to go back and scower for fruit..., Failing that I will climb the tree to try and find some... Um, one question though, anyone ever climb a tree home to a swooping magpie? Is he gunna try and swoop me whilst aloft?

| Because the park is full of them, and I know the E.moluccana very very well. It would have to easily be number 1 on my most removed eucs'.

John, It didn't occur to me that it was a gum topped box either. I thought the bark had a bronzy tinge to it. Ours are more off white/grey in colour unless. I thought their might have been some distingishing feature... Do you think it was planted? Or could it be a remanent tree? ![]() ![]()

I'm pretty sure they're remnants... Yeah it does have a bronzy tinge, all over it to its branch tips... molucanna tends to be grey and then eventually smooths out in the bark and is more a whitey colour towards the branch ends...

have you researched remnant species to the cumberland plains..? to be specific the blacktown area..? because trees of that size would be remnant imo.

Hi there Johndee, a tricky one indeed. Definately box bark. The key is that it has rough bark persistent to the smaller branches? Perhaps the colouring is due to that it is Decorticating? noticed that many species change colour at that time and then return to gray or white. Two species in the region with bark to the upper branches, namely Eucalyptus quadranulata and Eucalyptus bosistoana. But obviously can't be certain of any Ident. without the fruit. A useful link with the first hand knowledge you have might be : NSW eucalypts So back you go and scrabble around under that tree and perhaps if your worried about the maggies you could paint some eyes on the top of your hard hat. ![]() Seriously best of luck, Eucalyptus are a pain in the .... to Ident. Regards Julie |
