I've got a tree that I can't identify growing in southern China (Zhe Jiang to be more precise). It's leaves are definitely opposite, not alternate, and smooth, not jagged or lobed, with definite "indentations" along the veins. I'm presuming it's simple, not compound. Take a look at my first pictures: ![]() .. and I'll upload some more of the entire tree soon. |

How big is the tree? or how big does it grow? Some pics of the bark, and of full grown leaves laid flat would be helpful.

Looks a lot like a member of the cherry family (Prunus). Someone else here can almost certainly do better.

okay, so now I think it looks similar to a peach tree... is the possibility of it being a Lychee tree out of the question?

You know, I'm just 'throwing it out there', but I reckon it looks like a Gardenia. PERHAPS it is one of the common Chinese Gardenias? Or not? I am not really boned up on my Flora of China. (sorry!) The closest I could get to a deciduous one was the deciduous/semi-deciduous Gardenia sootepensis? The foliage photos can be a bit deceptive if it is regularly pruned back, but the leaf arrangement and shape look right, and the stems looks pretty good.. I am not entirely sure, but it looks like a Gardenia.. More pics dude! |

@very_sarcastic - you're right, it does look a lot like a gardenia. I guess I'll have to wait a few more weeks to see what kind of flowers it produces, if it does. I'll try to get some more pictures in a couple days. Quote:

Okay, I figured it out - it's a Gardenia Jasminoides. I found a plant store that was selling the exact same tree and he told me that's what it was. I've also noticed flower buds appearing on several of the trees that look very much like gardenia buds image search results that I'm able to find. So, very_sarcastic, you were right!
