The silvery foliage looks a bit like Russian Olive (Elaeagnus sp) but I don't think it has reddish bud scales.

What kind of site is the tree growing in -- ie moist soil, wet, dry -- clay sand ? Mostly sun or shade?

Well, pre-dominantly, we have red clay soil.. But where the 'specimen' is growing, it is moist, grassy, in the beginning of an over run area of our lower yard...

I will grab a pic of the area and post shortly....

I hope the photos show how overgrown the area is. Since we have had TONS of rain recently, you can see how lush and green the grass is!!
I added another close up of the leaves. and a close up of 'bleeder-type' stems off the main trunk..

Hi! Going by the seriously huge prophylls (the red 'leaf' type things), the lenticels (the spots on the stems) and the leaflets, I think this is a very young Carya ovata.

Check out the pics here:

Carya ovata (Shagbark Hickory)

When the leaves develop you will be able to get a more accurate ID.

Cheers!
