Hi, I looked at all the other tree vs. weed threads and none of the trees look like mine. This sprouted on it's own, in my backyard, and looks like a tree. But it is a pretty sickly looking tree / weed. Please help me identify if this is a weed and should be removed or not. It is right near a great big old tree. Not sure what type of tree that is either... Thank You. |

It is a common hackberry, Celtis occidentalis L., as for tree or weed perhaps these definitions of a weed will help you decided: 1) A weed is a plant that is out of place, 2) A weed is a plant where the usefulness of it has not been discovered.

Hackberry tends to grow fast and large, and it will not have enough space where it is -- it is too near the fence, the trunk will engulf the fence. Try to move it if possible

Here in Brisbane we have two weed species that are actually northern QLD indigenous trees:- Umbrella tree and Cadaghi What makes these weeds:- 3) Prolific and invades with the capacity to dominate. So weeds are often species that if left unchecked can take over dominating the area, they out compete the indigenous fauna. This happened with paperbark trees in the USA's Everglades.

Out of interest though some times we have to rethink that definition if it is serving a purpose. | |

refining the definition:- 3) Prolific and invades with the capacity to adversely dominate.
