Hi I have moved into a new property in Tunis and I have a big tree in the corner of the garden that produces strange yellow mushy fruit. They look like squashed yellow grapes, or a bit like a small yellow brain. Can anyone help me identify this tree? Attached are some pictures of the leaves of the tree and the abovementioned fruit... Thanks in advance! Confused tree guy |

Hi, Your tree looks a little bit like some variety of Ficus. Does it have a milky or clear sap if you break off a leaf? There are a few trees with fruit that would somewhat match the description of yours (eg Castilla elastica, Annona senegalensis). However, going by the uneven shape/colouration and proximity to the main trunk I think the 'small yellow brain' in the photo looks a bit more like the resin exudate caused by borer damage. Is it possible to get a good, clear close-up shot of the 'fruit'? Also the bark and overall tree shape? |

It could also be Terminalia species of some kind, but hard to tell from photos of leaf arrangement...???

Wow. Thanks. I will get some better pix and send them over shortly. Specifically of the overall tree shape and the bark. It is not a resin exudate, just a badly taken picture really. Several of such fruit were found lying on the ground, having recently tumbled off the tree. I will see if sap come out when I break off a leaf and revert back. Sorry for these obvious shortcomings in my photographic depictions, but I did not really know what to show in order to provide a clear descriptive. I will do so soon. Thanks in advance |

As promised, here are some further pitcure of the aforementioned mystery tree. Attached you will find a close up picture of the fruit, the bark, the tree structure and the leaves. I snapped off a leaf and no yellowy sap came out, thus ruling out (I think) the possibility of it being a rubber tree, right? In fact, no sap came out at all! I hope this provides you with the extra information needed. Thanks again. Regards |
