Default Tree in Sydney

Can anyone help me to identify this tree?
The pictures have been taken in North Bondi beginning of September and end of September (the ones with the green berries). Thanks!

Hi there,
I have a tree in my front yard which I have been trying to identify since I moved in a year ago. People have told me that it is a camphor laurel but I have looked at lots of pictures and while it seems to have some similarities, it also seems to be substantially different. I would really appreciate some help in identifying it - my husband is determined to chop it down because he is convinced that it is going to take over the yard and the rip up the plumbing (there is a large stormwater access drain directly beside the tree).

This is the full tree...

It is about 5 metres tall. It has grown over the spring months but doesn't seem to be sending out suckers all over the place like camphor laurels do.

These are the berries - these are from last season, and it is just about to start growing more, so it is mostly covered in these berries for about 9 months of the year, and some stay for the entire year. Birds don't seem to interested in eating them.

Sorry..not a great shot but here is the bark. Again, not typical of a camphor laurel - seems to be much smoother.

Another shot of the foliage - here is some of the old berries in the background, and the new growth in the foreground. The new growth is what reminds me most of the camphor laurel, and the leaves...

and one last picture...the berries again. These are what has me most confused...

...i have looked all over google to try to find a tree with these berries and I can't. So I turn in frustration to this community of tree people. Can you help me find the type of tree that I have in my garden?

The local council has got some planted as street trees, and I just can't quite believe that they would have planted camphor laurels deliberately...so I'm stuck. I really look forward to hearing from someone who knows more about all this than me.

Cheers

that is no Camphor Laurel my friend! That looks like Pittosporum rhombifolium. Native tree, drops heaps of sticky, sweety smelling seeds. A similar one is Pittosporum undulatum, however I don't think it would be deliberately planted. Pitto rhombifolium is common in cultivation.

Thanks very_sarcastic,

You have nailed it in one post. I looked up both and it is definitely the Pittosporum rhombifolium. In my looking around I found mention of it on the Botanic Gardens site where they said..."Occurs mostly in or near rainforest, open woodland and Brigalow open forest from Proserpine, Qld to north-eastern NSW. Cultivated widely and used as a street tree in many parts of Sydney."

So thanks for your swift and accurate reply. I am still going to have to talk hubby out of removing it, but at least I've got something solid to say in response now.

Thanks again,

eyesmalone

Just as a final comment...and more as an fyi for you very_sarcastic, there seems to have been a name change with the tree and it is now called...
Auranticarpa rhombifolia (PITTOSPORACEAE); Queensland pittosporum, diamond-leaved pittosporum, white holly, hollywood.

But it is the same plant and you had it right.

Cheers
