Hi, I am looking for the name of a tree of a few trees that I saw while I was driving on the highway earlier this week. I wish I had taken some pictures but I was driving... The tree seems to grow very well along highways. I noticed the tree growing in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Ontario... The tree kind of reminds me of a Mimosa type tree because of its ability to grow almost anywhere... But the leaves seem to be larger than Mimosa leaves. The tree has very distinctive brown cone like (the flowers look kind of like pine cones, kind of) flowers that seemed like they were red when alive. They stick up above the leaves. Another tree that I saw also reminded me of the mimosa because of its leaves but it has these yellow flowers. Also, I only saw this tree in the US. I know these descriptions are not very good. I couldn't really see the trees that well but I was just hoping that someone here might be familiar with these tree species because they seem common. Oh, and I also noticed these web-like structures in many trees in PA and NY that seemed to have a large brown structure inside of them. They kind of looked like egg shaped but a lot bigger. They would hang in between leaves and branches. Are these some kind of spider eggs? Thanks for any help on this. ![]() Last edited by MikeSwim07; 15th August 2011 at 01:40 PM. |

I'm actually thinking that the second tree I saw was a Honey Locust. Does new growth on honey locusts seem to be more yellow than the older leaves? Maybe this is why they looked like flowers to me? Oh and I saw one last tree that I was wondering about. I saw it in either NY or PA. The tree had pretty dense foliage and had these orange flowers. Definitely orange, not red-orange like a flame tree. Once again, sorry for the lack of any good detail.. Last edited by MikeSwim07; 15th August 2011 at 01:55 PM. |

the first tree i'm thinking is a staghorn sumac 'Rhus typhina', they grow in ditches and woods and can be invasive. the web things might be tent worm nests with the catarpillar pupas inside them

If the Honey Locust is variation Sunburst, the leaves come out yellow and then turn green. However, at this time of year, a cold night will prompt the leaves to turn yellow again in preparation for autumn and winter. And wherever possible, just pull over and take a quick picture -- makes ID a lot easier.
