Default Tree in San Francisco?

Hi just wondering if anyone can id this tree for me... im travelling and have noticed a lot of tree's that are very similar or the same species as some we have in melbourne. This one i cant seem to Id, it looks familiar but they have been pollarded in the past so the form confuses me. The bark is similar to a ficus but lighter grey and the leaves are similar shape to a lilly pilly (Acmena smithii) but they are much larger.
anyway if anyone can help it would be great. cheers.

Wild guess for a bad picture

How about Ivory Curl Tree (Buckinghamia celcissima), but might not be as that is a warmer climate tree.

Another wild guess, southern magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora L., the (alternate) leaves look glossy (on the upper surface), thick/leathery, and the color range seems right for vigorous growth. Difficulty is lack of scale and fine details that are often important for accurate identification; fruit would help, but the pollard would tend to prevent this in favor of vegetative growth.

Maybe Eriobotrya deflexa???

You could try contacting an organisation like Friends of the Urban Forest

They might be able to help you out.

The tree in your photo is located on Polk St in San Francisco.

Legend !!!!!!!!!! they looked a little like ficus in the trunk but the form was misleading due to the pollarding.. Anyway thanks for the ID.
