Help! Can you ID this tree? I have no picture. Location central Florida, along the coast. I think obviously an exotic but it could be from anywhere! "There was a tree growing in my backyard that I had cut down about 10 months ago after it began to spring up roots and additional saplings. After we had the tree cut down, we were out of town for 6 months. We have now returned to a full root system of multiple runners and saplings coming from the stump. The tree was approximately 10 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 5-6 inches and with spikey thorns on the bark. The roots, some with a diameter of 1 1/2-2 inches, have a yellowish, striated outer layer. The leaves are a dark green color with the veins on the leaf being a deep cranberry color. It has a very distinctive, pungent odor when the leaves are crushed. I did not see any flowers or berries. There are no other trees like this in the surrounding area. We do have an unattended vacant lot behind our property. Can you suggest any way to prevent further runners from developing? What do I do to treat the remaining stump? How do I dispose of the clippings? Thanks everyone for your help |

Have someone grind the stump, and grind the runners. After thats done treat the area with round up tough brush and ivy killer.

I agree with Newguy, unless you can't get a stump grinder to it - then you have to dig out the stump, and all runners - and if you leave a piece of root, it will probably regrow. Roundup is only good if applied above ground level- it will go in and kill root systems, but must be applied above ground. Be thorough, sift the soil if necessary, and with luck, you will only have to do the job once.
