yep.
It seems this one has taken quite a bit of cold in an open area for many years. This area of the world gets to -4 at head height and like -8 or more at the ground in winter. So we see the occasional plant that makes it through the winters when supposedly they shouldnt.40 degrees of hot in summer to cope with too.
On the hunt for some more varieties of cold tolerant palms.

Low humidity.Occasional report of sleet in winter but mostly frozen pipes and occasional toilet.

Black soil, waco clay mostly.Swells and cracks.

Bismarckia will go ok in some areas then get totally burnt off in others, though come back.

Yikes, not the sort of conditions most palms like.

Ekka is pretty good on the palm species, I'm not that informed on them.
Perhaps palms from high altitudes are the go. As I said Ekka is the palm specialist.

When I get time I'll do some research as I'd like to know myself. If I find anything of interest I'll post.

this link could prove useful Palm and Cycad Societies of Australia maybe contact them

Regards Julie

Sounds like what I remember of Glen Davis Half way between Mudgee and Lithgow, not quite snow but real cold. Lots of frosts. I did one winter there. Remember the frozen pipes well.

Check this one out, might be worth investigating. All are reputed to be cold tolerant

Dwarf Sugar Palm / Formosa Palm (Arenga engleri) - reputed to be very frost tolerant. Nice looking clumping variety. This one might be a go.

the following just a maybe.....
Dypsis Pink Crown (Pink Crown Palm) Madagascar –light frost
Ivory Cane palm (Pinanga Coronata) Indonesian very light frost
Redneck/Teddy Bear palm (Dypsis Leptocheilos) light frosts
Triangle palm (Dypsis decaryi) light frost.

regards Julie
