i don't know if you guys can ID stumps but here it goes... i found a mushroom on this stump in an eastern hemlock forest with few small oaks around (as you can see from the leaves on the ground)... i assume this is a Tsuga canadensis stump but am not positive... if you could even narrow it down to hardwood/softwood thats really all i need... (i am perplexed because this mushroom is not known to grow from softwoods..) |

Try and get some good pictures of the bark that is left on the stump. You may be better able to compare it to the surrounding hemlock though. What type of mushroom did you find that raises the question? |

of course you'd find a strange shroom on a randomly felled tree in what appears to be the middle of some woods... lol... it's a sign man! honestly couldn't tell you from the stump. too old to hold enough bark or colour for an id but like bsearcey said, compare the bark. from my experience though, mushrooms will grow in "unusual" places sometimes and on mediums that you wouldn't expect if the conditions are right. |

the bit of bark on the stump matches the surrounding trees though, now that i look again. and the fibers on the stump look like it might be a harder wood. um... don't eat the mushroom... i just saw your other thread... the pics are from the shroomery.... if you did eat it, i hope you lived to read this. I know my mushrooms, do not need advice in that area. I don't know the history of the forest, and its been cut before... all the stumps could be hardwoods the foresters got rid of so they could create this climax hemlock forest... that would make all the stumps hardwoods while the forest is all softwood... that would answer a lot of questions... (i am CERTAIN of the mushroom species growing from this stump and it grows ONLY from hardwoods) Thanks for the help, I think I'll go back and double check the stumps at some point and try to compare bark... but then again the outer layer of bark is mostly gone and softwoods rot from the outside-in, whereas hardwoods rot from the inside-out... |

I'm still curious about the mushroom that you are so certain about. The photo on your other thread was not there. It very well could be a hardwood stump. Maybe a DNA test would help. |

I am not familiar with that mushroom; what kind of hardwood does it grow on? Given the age and growth of the conifers here, it seems unlikely a hardwood stump would survive in the great condition it appears as in the photo. Can you make a horizontal slice in the top of the stump, and show us a pic, and a closeup of the bark that is left on the stump? |
