Strange tree in Bay Area, CA

This tree grows along a lake. There are also marshes nearby.

I don't have a photo of the leaves but they grow in bunches of 5 or so, each on its own petiole. Small lobes, single vertical vein and alternating branching veins. They look like this:

Maybe a largetooth aspen Populus grandidentata or P. tremula 'Erecta' -- Upright European Aspen
