I am supposed to cut this tree down today but I like it. I was going to transplant it if it was a good tree. However, I do not know anything about it or what kind it is. I has to be moved or cut down because it is crowding our Lilac bush. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Any help is appreciated One thought was Yleing Yleing (spelling?) |

It looks like a tree-of-heaven Ailanthus altissima - a very hardy tree, capable of growing to 60-80 feet, tolerates pollution, most soils, thrives on neglect. Sap is a problem for some people, and wood has an odour not liked by most people. May transplant well, but pick a sunny spot, and somewhere it has room to grow. BTW, the leaf is a pinnately compound leaf, and what you think are leaves are actually leaflets, typically 18-24 leaflets, no tip leaflet. |

Break off a leaf and sniff. I think it smells like peanut butter (sort of). Very invasive and most states have erradication procedures in place for them. Make sure you use a good herbicide on the fresh cut stump to kill it to the roots.

We've renamed them "trees from hell", they grow like weeds but can get pretty big if left to grow. Eradicating them is quite a pain in areas where they've really taken hold and started proliferating.

It does look like tree of heaven. The leaflets have a notch near the petioles. I love this tree, but it is weedy. It is good in places like riverbanks where the roots are confined by a road. It is illegal to propagate or sell this tree in my country.

| That is rather a pity. The wood is reasonably hard, when sliced as lumber looks very much like white ash, but slightly more yellow. The wood tends to be somewhat brittle at edges for fine finishing, but the hardness means it wears well. Could be used for panelling or flooring or even facing cabinets etc. SInce it grows fast and (in Ontario) to at least 3 ft in diameter, and 80 feet tall - could have plantations of tree-of-heaven and harvest the timber in 40-60 years instead of 80-120 for Ash. The smell as lumber is not long lasting. Finishes quite well.
