Thanks – how positive are you that it is beech? Are there any trees that it could be confused with?

Thanks! Sure, I found this listing of wood that's safe/unsafe for pet birds:http://bit.ly/fRkZfz Thanks again for your help. The leaves around there might have been from another beech. The branch that I took came from a part that had obviously cut off by an axe. Oddly enough I didn't see any trees in the vincinity it could have come from. There were no leaves on it apart from that leaf fragment of which i attached a photo in my first post. Last edited by Eric Frei; 11th April 2011 at 06:46 PM. Reason: changed link |

The bark of the tree and the branch arrangement looks very much like beech. However the buds do not. THere are few other trees that could resemble beech, except perhaps Blue-beech (not a beech) (Carpinus caroliniana) - BOth have very hard woods that can stand up to bird abuse.
