I saw the new movie Red Riding Hood and I noticed that there were some trees in the film that had spikes all down the trunks and they reminded me of thorns, but spaced out. Does this tree actually exist? The filmed the movie in Vancouver, Canada. Here is a picture of the poster: Thanks! Last edited by Eric Frei; 21st March 2011 at 08:25 PM. If these are real trees, the apparent thorns could just as easily be small branches, ends broken and dead. In my experience, thorns seldom exceed 3-4 inches in length -- and they from Hawthorns (Crataegus sp) or Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos).

I watched the trailer, I think they're just movie trees but there is an image that looks like them. I don't know what it is, maybe just dead branches. The movie sure gets a bad write up. |

The 2nd tree looks like a spruce (by the bark), and the branch ends look to have been sharpened to enhance the spooky feeling, and then naturalized to keep out reality with the audience. The bigger first picture looks the same -- they look like real trees (possibly pines), with manipulated branches. I guess it is possible they were added on to the trees, the bases look unnaturally large - and too consistently. I haven't seen the movie or the trailer, but I agree the writeup says why bother.
