Default Poison Ivy Vein

Is it safe for the Bur Oak for me to remove the 5" poison ivy vine running up its trunk? The tree is still alive and the poison ivy vein is also green up top in the higher branches of this magnificent few hundred year old tree.

Hi Randy.
Welcome to Tree World. What my Dad used to do in our bush, was take a small liming axe, without hurting the tree bark, he would cut out a chunk out of the vein, about a foot long.
He would knock out the chunk, with the axe, and the vein would die, and dry up, and sooner or later the rest of the vein would decompose, and fall from the tree. I also do this now and again, to help clean up some of the trees, that have it growing on them.
Be Careful when you do this. Even in the dead of winter, the vein is still alive, and green with juice, and if you are allergic to it, you can still get the rash from it. I've had it several times, even in the winter. Bruce.
