Default Odd nut tree

Looking to identify this tree in this photo. It was taken June in North Carolina. I did not open the nuts so I can not give too many more specifics but they were large clusters on the tree and each nut was about 2" long. The leaves were huge, perhaps 15" long.

The leaves are heart shaped (Cordate?) and it veins are paired (pinnate?). From few photos of a pistachio leaf I could find, the seem to be more oval.

I wish I lived in NC so I could go get a second look. Perhaps what appears to be nuts are really some sort of bud?

It is located on the service road to the Watauga Dam along the Appalachian Trail.

After further review of the photos I think the Pawlownia tomentosa - Royal Empress Tree may be correct (also goes by common name of Princess Tree).

It may also be a Paulownia fortunei - dragon tree. I think it is the same tree with white flowers. Without knowing the colors of the flower it is hard to tell which it was. However, for my purpose, I have enough. Thanks for the help.
