Dear EM

Maybe my eyes are failing me but I can't make out much detail from your picture. Can you get closer, maybe throw the vicious dog a bone to distract him while you sneak over for a closer look.

pics of flowers and closer look at leaves will help with identification. Pic of leaves to show top and underside and the nature of the leaf arrangement on the branch. Is there any old fruit under the tree? Pic of the bark too, just in case.

Cheers

Cheers mate, am relying on webcam at the mo as my camera is kaput. Hence the poor quality. A nurseryman suggested it was a longan, or species of, as they dont always fruit every season unless stressed.
Will take some more shots of the specifics in a few days if i still have no news.

The flowers, leaf arrangement and leaves look a lot like a privet, but if that is fruit on the tree, it is something different.

Extaz

Just got the name - .

Brent - I am inclined to agree with his suspicion that he has tropical fruit Lychee or Longan

Had a quick trip to the backyard and yeah, it looks like my longans alright, the tree shape, dark glossy lvs, pinnate and rising of the rachis, leaf shape size ok fruit arrangement (inflorescence) fits and one of my longans and a lychee are also budding now. The leaf veins on both my trees are more distinctive than appears in your picture but I am not inclined to put a lot of emphasis on the difference.

I have seen several varieties of longan in the bigger commercial nurseries around here and there can be a bit of physical difference between them, so a longan seems reasonable with the information assembled so far. A ripe fruit would settle any debate for sure.

The mango is a fleshy stone fruit belonging to the genus Mangifera, consisting of numerous tropical fruiting trees in the flowering plant family Anacardiaceae. The mango is native to India from where it spread all over the world. It is also the most cultivated fruit of the tropical world. While other Mangifera species (e.g. horse mango, M. foetida) are also grown on a more localized basis, Mangifera indica – the common mango or Indian mango – is the only mango tree commonly cultivated in many tropical and subtropical regions, and its fruit is distributed essentially worldwide.
