I live in Ohio, in the US, and I received some trees from the Arbor Day Foundation two years ago. Most of the trees are growing, but now I am not sure which ones are which. I've tried to check on-line, but the young trees do not always look like the mature trees. Can anyone help out?? The list of trees they sent include: Sagent Crabapple, Washington Hawthorn, White Flowering Dogwood, Goldenraintree, and Crapemyrtle. The two photos are of one of the trees which has the most branches. It is a medium speed grower, and is now about 3' tall. It has really red branches, and unfortunately most of it's leaves are starting to fall off. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! |

Leaves resemble dogwood (Cornus florida). As for the red bark, never seen one with that. That might indicate the crabapple, I have seen them with reddish bark out on the terminal limbs of mature ones.

Red Osier Dogwood (Cornus sericea) - quite common tolerates some shade, twigs are redder in sun

When I got the first 10 free trees (redbud instead of crape-myrtle) the "white dogwood" was a kousa dogwood, but this one looks like a red osier as mentioned in a previous post. I had 90% survival on the first 10 trees, but averaged only 10% survival on all subsequent packages of 10 trees. I'm a bit of a purest when in comes using only native plants so I eventually got tired of constantly having exotic and in some cases invasive plant offers being crammed down my throat as well as the "white dogwood" common name bait and switch. Another thing was practically omitting the nonnative parentage of the hybrid (meaning illegitimate) American hazelnuts being pushed. |
