Default Mystery tree NSW Australia

This tree has been living in my fathers yard for approx 40yrs. Have no clue what it is and I have never seen another like it.
We live in the western suburbs of NSW, Australia.
it has needle like leaves (singular not clusters and they are scaled needles not smooth) and gets these tiny pink flowers that grow along the needle.
I would appreciate any response as this tree has been hollowed out by borers and will probably die, and my family is very sad as we seem to have a connection to this tree and if it should die we want to plant another one.

That looks like a Tamarisk (Tamarix sp.) Tamarix aphylla is considered to be a noxious weed.

I have seen Tamarix ramosissima
at a nursery, it is not considered to be a weed. If you could get a close-up of the foliage that is in focus you could get a 100% ID!

I agree. It looks like a Tamarisk.

It is not considered a weed here in Canada, but more like a precocious planting --but then it also doesn't reach tree size - prob because of our frosty winters.

Absolutely any tree or shrub can become a weed so dont feel bad. We have a species of Euc (gumtree) in Galston that is a weed simply because it does not belong there.

hahaha a lot of popular garden plants are (in MY book) weeds, especially when planted en masse in bushland-adjacent gardens. In fact, most gardens have at least one plant in them that is considered a weed in some part of the world so don't fret!

If you are hell bent on continuing the legacy you could just get a different, non-invasive species. Won't be exactly the same but close enough.

Cheers!

Well, you need to have 10 posts up and 3 days membership, both criteria to be fulfilled.
