Default mystery tree in CO.

I purchased some Hens and Chics this summer from a local nursery. I now have a tree growing and would like to know what it is.

Looks like a some sort of weedy Elm.

Probably Red Elm (Ulmus rubra) but there's a chance it could be a Rock Elm, a Siberian Elm or maybe something else.

Siberian elm, Ulmus pumila L., is only elm found in Colorado. It is a noxious exotic weed. I know somebody who unknowingly ordered them as a fast growing shade tree from a nursery (apparently profiting from it being so weedy) that demanded a sooner shipping date before the seedlings got so big they couldn't be shipped. After hearing that he was a little worried about how fast they would grow.

Siberian Elm might be weedy, but it is unaffected by Dutch Elm disease, makes a great hedge -- if trimmed yearly -- provides lots of shade and fruit, burns reasonably, and provides regular work for the local arborist, and has a relatively short life of about 80 years. Branches can be brittle.
