I think I may have identified it: An indian bean tree Catalpa erubescens 'Purpurea'

Can someone who "knows foliage" look at these and the name and see if I'm close?

Thanks!

I agree, looks like Catalpa. The flowers are wonderful and remind me of Foxglove.

I can't narrow it down to a specific cultivar for you though. Sorry!

Hi there Fordbuyerdavid,

I would say that the specimen shown is more likely to be Catalpa bignoniodes rather than Catalpa erubescens 'Purpurea'.

The reason for my assumption is that Catalpa bignonioides has two stripes of yellow in the throat of the inflorescences with purple markings, whilst Catalpa erubescens 'Purpurea' has three yellow stripes in the throat with purple markings.

From this I have checked against the other species, the colouring is most accurate for Catalpa bignonioides.

Good call on finding it to be a Catalpa species

regards Julie
