Default Mystery leaf

Gday all, A friend was given a pot plant with a very curious leaf structure, I cant find any info on it so im not sure of what size it reaches at maturity. Does anyone know what the name of this little fella might be?

Ah, perhaps i should add that this was a small section which was broken off in order to take it to some nursery's and take a picture.

The plant is about 5 foot tall

Diesel,

I use to work at the Mount Coo-tha Botanic Gardens in Brisbane. This was in 1988 so it was some time ago... The only thing I can remember being similar to this was a weird shrub called Ruscus sp. It was planted in the temperate gardens near the lakes and restaurant area. So it probably came from Europe. Sorry I can't remember its common name.

Afternoon gentlemen, have seen this shrub before but the name escapes me. I'm fairly sure that it is the flower that is protuding from the leaf. Quite an unusual modification. Stav
