Default Is my tree dying??

I have a smallish tree, multiple trunk with small leaves, no varigation...the canopy is something i have always maintained but recently it has started losing lower branches and has no new growth underneath...I have lost another tree recently and when I cut it down the trunk had been hollowed out by something! I would like to know what type of tree this is so I can check for common ailments.. and take steps to make sure its healthy! Can anyone help?

We need better pics.

Decay causes hollows.

Need closeups of leaves, flat if possible, bark, and preferably with the top of the tree to the top of the post. Loss of lower branches may simply be a loss of light.

Hard to say anything definitive without better pics. Close ups would help. You say you had to cut one down already. If your tree is losing lower limbs and putting on new ones under that, it could simply be stressed. As living organism, the tree will try to maintain homeostasis. When a part is lost, other coppice stump or root growth may emerge to compensate for the loss. As THN says also, it could simply be a light issue. Gotta have sunlight to promote photosynthesis for energy. A significant loss of energy will leave the tree stressed. When a tree stresses, it will do a few things, put on new growth, try to blossom or seed, etc. This is a natural defense mechanism to ensure survival of the species. Get some more pics and details and maybe we can narrow down what's happening.
