Well, I dont know the scientific name or anything but in autumn (Yankee fall) and spring you get them popping up everywhere, just mow them down!

IDing mushrooms can be very difficult, and you need to be dead certain of the species before eating them. It is best to have them certified by an expert before ingesting. Otherwise you can die from eating them, and very fast. Usually the toxins overwhelm your liver and/or kidneys, and you die of a fast and painful death as your organs shut down. There are usually several lethal cases of mushroom poisoning in the SF bay area every year, as asians pick poisonous mushrooms there that look just like a choice edible type in asia. Read: mushrooms here in North America may look very similar to mushooms in other parts of the world, but they are typically *not* the same species. Those look like one of several types of deadly amanitas. Not so easy to ID from photos. Amanitas are very common in the western US in lawns. They are highly toxic, and they can be quite tasty when they are eaten. They have polypeptides that when broken down by the liver, produce complex compounds that in turn kill liver cells. The liver shuts down and the person usually dies in extreme and severe pain. The photos also look very much like Chlorophyllum molybdites, which is also poisonous. Though not as leathal as amanitas, they can produce strong abdominal pain, hallucinations and major discomfort. They can be lethal in children, or if eaten in large amounts. Read: you better be CERTAIN of the mushrooms that you are eating. I can ID several local types of mushrooms, and all of their close similar types, like the chanterelles and boletus. I learned to ID them from experts and mushroom buyers in the PNW. I am chanterelle intolerant though, so I do not pick or eat them any more. They give me the squirts. |

Good answer Windthrown. I believe that mushrooms with a ring around the stem as in Therrin's pictures, are commonly poisonous. DO NOT EAT. If you do, (need to check) but I think heavy doses of intravenous alpha-lipoic acid can reverse the atrophying of the liver, and recovery MAY be possible. Be safer. DO NOT EAT unless can be verified by an expert is edible.

| Chlorophyllum molybdites (MushroomExpert.Com) Very common in the western US. Note similarity to some types of amanita, and specific to North America. Species of fungi that grow in Oz, Africa, Asia and Europe... are not typically what grow here. |
