Default Multi-Trunk Winter Tree/Shrub ID in Upstate NY, USA

My tree identification skills are very bad when Winter rolls around. Here is the second of two species on a lot that I will be helping to organize a community beautification project this coming spring and summer, and it would be nice to know the species that are currently present. But without leaves or fruit I need some help in confirming them. This is located in Upstate NY, USA.

Second tree is multi-trunking, large bush-like. Maybe a serviceberry or something similar.

The bark reminds me of Juneberry (Amelanchier sp), but the leaf and buds don't look quite right.

looks like Populus species buds to me

which one I'd be only guessing not being familiar with your northern species, compare with following link, which has a good image of a Populus buds

Protic - Populus

hope this helps

Thanks Julie, the buds do look similar, but would the multi-trunking characteristic of my tree contraindicate Populus or not?

When I saw the buds and leaf, I thought this is a Poplar. But the bark, and the structure of the stems, and multi-stems from the ground and the way they are growing said it was more likely Amelanchier(also known as Juneberry, or Serviceberry). I am going by the wavy pattern in the gray tone of the bark, and the branches themselves are too narrow for the several Poplar species I am familiar with. The third picture suggests not enough overlapping scales on the bud for Poplar. Unfortunately, I have taken all my reference books into a show - so I can only go on recall...

yes I think Brent is more on the right track. The reddened stems do not say Populus that I'm familiar with, nor the multi stemmed habit.

What about Amelanchier alnifolia?

Looking good for serviceberry. Guess will know for sure when leaves and berries come in.
