Talking Is this a Mulberry tree?

Found this tree growing in my old sheep yard. We are in the process of reseeding the sheep yard into lawn and would like to know if this tree should be cut down of if I want to let it grow. It is about 9 feet tall and has the funky shaped leaves. In looking it seems this closely matches a Mulberry either red or white I don't know. However I have noticed some differences with some of the pictures I have looked at. The leaves on my tree are darker (the small ones are lighter green) and the lobe on the end is pointed but the lopes on either side are rounded. Any ideas? Is it a Mulberry? and do I want to keep it as part of my new lawn?

Default Re: Is this a Mulberry tree?

A good key to verify that it is a mulberry is to pinch off a leaf to observe any milky sap. In your area a white mulberry, Morus alba L., is more likely that a red mulberry, Morus rubra L., and the relatively glossy leaves indicate that this is the case since red mulberry leaves feel rougher. Another slight difference is that the tips of the leaf and lobes is more pointed on red mulberry. The leaf shape (number of lobes, etc.) is variable especially when there is vigorous growth such with saplings. If you are hoping for fruit it will have to be a female tree, and if so be prepared for the wildlife it attracts.
