I have a 5 year old laburnun in my garden which is covered in snails and all the leaves seem to be gone, any ideas what is going on

While snails and slugs usually eat decaying material, they will also eat succulent plant tissue (new leaves). The simplest solution is to pick off the snails-slugs and spread crushed egg shells around the tree/plant you are trying to protect. The snails and slugs stay away from material that can penetrate their mucosal layer that they move along with, and that is usually enough. If you like snails, you could always try eating them; I have been told they are quite edible,
