Default Identification help! Totally stumped!

Hi all, does anyone know what this tree is. I see them everywhere in N. Illinois and its driving me crazy. The long bowing trunks and the bleach stripes on the bark are always a dead give-away. Thanks!

Looks like an A. Elm, with a disease called wetwood, common name "slime flux".

ProSevice, from the look of the form of the tree I would say American Elm (Ulmus americana). Without seeing the bark, buds, and twig arrangement, it is impossible to confirm Here is a simple ID site from a google search on tree identification Tree Identification

There are literally hundreds of site to help you identify trees. The best way is to search "trees of _______(your state)". Don't feel bad about the photo, an arborist wanted input on a hazard tree beside a house with WORSE pictures than yours!

The strips on the tree, assuming it is an elm, is bacterial slim flux. It is not unusual to see that in that particular species.

Is the "wetwood" or "slime flux" a disease or a normal condition. I see many of these Elms with the same condition. I am surprised, now that I know what I'm looking at, how many MANY american elms are living in my area! Thanks so much for the help!

Here is a link to a description to the issue. http://www.unce.unr.edu/publications...003/fs0333.pdf

The link was derived from a google search "Bacterial flux of elm". There are pages of information on the topic. Some are technical some are people friendly.

I hope this helps.

this is one of my favorite places to ID trees trees that I have never seen or don't know what they are.
What Tree Is It? HOME
It is very user friendly, but probably only good for trees on our side of the pond
