First of all, let me apologize for not being able to attach a few pictures of the tree. I'll get some as soon as I can. The tree (actually several of them) range from 20-30 ft tall; they line a parking lot in front of our office building. I'll give you all the same info I entered into arborday.org trying to identify it. The leaves are flat and thin (broadleaf), shed annually (they're mostly bare right now), simple, alternate, not fan-shaped, not lobed, margins are entire. The tree is completely covered in berries, between .5 and 1 inch I would say -- dark orange/brown colored. At first I thought it was a cockspur hawthorn, but the tree doesn't have any thorns on it. The birds love the tree--it's being swarmed by cedar waxwings, nuthatches, woodpeckers, you name it. It's pretty darn cool, but I have no idea what kind of tree it is (maybe non-native?) |

There are thornless varieties of Cockspur Hawthorn (or with very very rare thorns), so you might have already identified it. If you were willing to dig around in the branches for awhile, you might eventually find a thorn, but it's difficult. Otherwise, maybe it's some type of crabapple? Does it appear to have spurs or spur-like growth? |

Berry wise - if in clusters - and bird wise sounds like American Mountain-Ash Sorbus americana - - although these leaves do not have entire margins. Cut open the fruit and check the inside colour, and what the seeds look like and the structure of the fruiting body. And try a taste test. A description of that can help ID tree for you.

Sounds like a Bradford pear to me. Especially considering where it is planted.

Bradford pear is a reasonable bet. Need pics to be sure.
