Hi, I was just wondering if someone could please help me ID this tree, which I had assumed was a eucalypt but I have been going through exhausting amounts of info on eucalypt taxonomy and am stumped! It was found in the mouth of the Lerderderg State Forest in Victoria, Australia. I (stupidly) did a study of trunk circumference for a first year uni assignment and thought I had a good idea of the species but was woefully wrong and now I have heaps of data but no idea what tree it's all from!! Any help would be hugely appreciated - cheers Christie |

I have scoured my euc books and it stumps me too. Did it have caps (fruit) like a euc? Leaf is "sort of like" E platyphylla but the rest no way.

Thanks for the reply ![]() No caps were present which has given a great deal of trouble in ID'ing it I am thinking its not a euc but am now at a loss with where to start as I am just starting my ecology subject and have not even touched plant taxonomy yet... |

An unqualified laymans opinion only, but if I saw it locally in East Gippsland I have a guess, from what I can see in the pics as a common "Red Box" tree.

Christie The photo of the leaf doesn't show how long the leaf stem really is. This may be a significant clue if it is not a Eucalypt. Are both sides of the leaf the same color? The photos of the bark and general tree shape are very useful to help in ID, a good habit to have. Can I suggest to you how useful it is to have a really good ferret around the base of the tree to look for old fruits if you can't find fruiting or flowering material on the branches. RM |

Yeah, but the bark was throwing me off, how does the bark compare from pics I viewed it was different but it could vary slightly I suppose. That leaf could also be a juvenile one, mature ones are slightly different. Probably the best match from the eucs I agree.

You guys are awesome!! ![]() I had initially thought red box but the bark threw me off when I went to confirm as there is quite a contrast between images and the lack of fruit as well. The subspecies vestita seems the closest match to what I have so I think I will run with that Such a relief to be able to write my report! Thanks again!! |
