Default Help identify my tree

Please help identify my tree. I live in Montgomery, TX just north of Houston, within the area of the Sam Houston national forest. The bark sheds puzzle like pieces, no fruit, thorns, just leaves. It has very large exposed roots. (blame for my broken foundation!). Also, can I cover the exposed roots so I can plant flowers around the tree?
thank you very much!!!
