Hi My dad recently showed me some pictures of a tree at his house and I need help identifying it if anyone can help. It's a palm-like tree and it has suddenly had a massive shoot grow out of its crown and flower. I've included some pictures my dad took. He hasn't photographed the tree very well, you can only just see the top of it, but you can see the entire shoot that has grown out of the crown. The shoot is about 10 - 15 feet tall. The tree was also about 10 - 15 feet tall and has never done anything like this before. It's probably about 20 years old. He said all the leaves on the tree suddenly drooped down and then this spike grew out of the top. He said the spike grew really quickly. I've managed to find something similar called a Talipot Palm but it looks different to this. The other close match I found was the Madagascar Palm tree, however from what I can understand these are extremely rare and only bloom once every 100 years. It's hard to identify without seeing the tree itself I know, but these pics are all I have. I've found pictures of Talipots and Madagascar Palm's sprouting but they don't look the same as this. I'm in New Zealand but this plant must be from another country. Any help would be appreciated! |
