Hey everybody first post! I was hoping to get some answers here about a tree I noticed near Mt. Hood Oregon. This tree is located on the Barlow road section of the Oregon Trail. It's a Cedar (I think) that has been chopped half way thru with a axe but who ever was choping must have changed there mind about falling the tree. The bark has grown half way around the cut. What is interesting to me is that it appears to be burned on the cut, the last big fire to pass thru the area was around 1915 I think. So is it possible that this cut was from a pioneer? They would have been passing right by this tree between 1847 and 1915. Any ideas or thoughts would be great! Btw this is my first time posting pics on any forum so wish me luck. Edit, pics are too big. Will try to resize |

Sorry for the delay in getting the pictures up. Looks like I got them posted, here are some more. Any thoughts on how long it might take for this tree to grow it's bark around like this? One shot here shows the growth rings, but would the exposed rings stop adding more in the area it was cut out? Is this half of the tree dead? |

That's really interesting. There doesn't seem to be a lot of decay, especially if the cut is dozens of years old, I doubt 1915 though, I think maybe last 10 years or so. I think the best way would be to take a core just above or below .... right through and match back to front rings.

Afternoon, the first of the looking up pics. seemed to indicate an above gound line of some sort. Could it possibly be that someone tried to fell this specimen, then had a look up. STAV
