Default Fungi ID - Interesting big one

Got this guy up a Forest Red Gum maybe 15'

It's rather unusual, came off really easy.

Yeah, Wellington Point.

I washed it and put it in my garage, I never seen one like that.

Hmmm, surfing the net not a lot out there about it. The tree also had ganaderma fungi on it but this guy was a prize catch.

So what's it do?

Hmmm...I would like another go at the ID probably more likely to be Trametes lactinea on reflection, there is a fair bit of confusion in the classification of this group of fungi in Qld, so could be also be Tyromyces P.Karsten species, sorry to be less than definate but it is just not possible to pick it from the photos alone (as good as they are).

Irrespective of the final naming, all of the mentioned fungi are recorded as causing brown rots ie they break down cellulose and hemicelluloses preferrentially but do not effectively decompose lignin.

Now I think I have mentioned elsewhere that these terms are really only general indicators rather than golden rules about the modes of decomposition that the fungi might manifest.....however the traditional classification was really based on the end result in the affected wood tissues....the decayed wood acquires a brittle consistency cracks easily into cubes and crumbles easily into powder.

The fungi you encountered would be imo acting as a perennial canker in a long term contest with the tree.

The trametes i know form dense clumps and generally have little effect on the trees they are on, i usually find white rot that only just breaks the surface of the trees. in the uk there is a fungus that attacks sunburned trees but i cant remember the fungi itmay be the (bear with me) shizophillium i think there is another that is related to the trametes but i dont know it.

Trees buggered now!

I turned it into a hideous habitat tree. have yet to ring bark it.

It was near dead with 100% mistletoe but RSC wanted a koala pole.

It is an interesting area, having the Islands and the mainland...Islands tend to be pretty strict i their controls..mind having said that I did see some dreadful lopping on Macleay Island a while back. Have only done a couple of jobs there.
