so this tree is in my mother in laws back yard here near Laguna beach CA. its got a deep redish brown peely type bark. its about 10-15 feet tall, the most interesting thing are the hanging clusters of pink bell shaped flowers that attract bees and the coolest little birds. i wish i could get a better picture of the fruit but there are only small green ones and this one, they turn red and get to be the size of a cherry and look like one, all except the skin is bumpy almost likes its covered in little seed type things. they fall on the ground, my dog eats them. i tasted one the inside looks kinda peachy? any idea? |

Can you post a pic of the inside of the fruit? And some leaves laid flat on the stem so we can see the leaf arrangement, the base of the leaf, length of petiole etc.

Hi! True, they are good pics for ID purposes. Looks like your tree is an Arbutus species. Going by the bark, and pink tinged pendulous flowers....maybe Arbutus glandulosa (native to Mexico) or Arbutus x andrachnoides? There are a few around and can be quite variable. You can eat the fruit HOWEVER they are not worth writing home about.. hahahah!! |

Arbutus x andrachnoides seems to be the answer, really neat tree thats brings alot of life around it... pretty funny the fruit fermits on the tree and bears eat them and get drunk lol. says you can make some brandy out of them too!
