Hi guys. Does anyone know what this is please. A friend bought a trailer load of mixed seedlings for his farm and gave me 40 of these for my blocks but he can't remember what they are and how tall they'll grow. West Coast Vic . They have a slightly fury stem right now and a Eucalyptus scent on leaves and stem. Thanks for that Cheers |

Hi Rena, ![]() you gave us a hard one there, the problem with tubestock size Eucalyptus is they are near impossible to ident as the juvenile leaves such as these usually look little like the adult leaf form, and many Eucs juvenile leaves start opposite and then develop into alternate arrangement. Judging from your description of a Eucalyptus smell suggests maybe a Euc but some other species have this smell as well. The red stem, opposite leaves, shape, and hairyness could suggest Angophora , but there are too many variables. So a positive ident at this stage is well nigh impossible. Most Eucalyptus are identified by the capsules. Looks like you have a lucky dip at this stage. Whatever you have err on the safe side and give it ample room to grow, some of these species can grow very large. Wait and see what develops. |

Thanks for that. I'm glad that was the problem , I thought I was getting the snub. Your certainly not wrong though, there are so many and many of those seem close to identical at that age don't they. But , we have an ID. Two hrs on the net yesterday , checking out what the regeneration people provide for the area , Great Ocean Road . I was pretty sure he said they supplied him , but I couldn't get anybody there to ask. Then I found a list and then pics of their Eucalyptus and before long we had an exact match. Swap Gum , Eucalyptus Ovata. Bad news is they grow from 8 to 25m apparently but the good news made my day , they're a really nice tree and the Koalas favorite food, birds love them too they say. So now that I know I do have spots on the blocks where they'll be fine even at that size so great stuff. All the best |

If you are correct and you have Koala food thats great. ![]() Just be prepared for a potentially big tree and it turning out to be something else, sounds like you are aware of that, best of luck with them. | |
