Sorry if this has been asked 1000 times but I need an ID on these. I'm almost positive its a cedar but a second opinion sure would be reassuring. I'm a photographer and don't want to call a juniper a cedar and vise versa. Thanks, --Josh 1. ![]() 2. ![]() Thanks again, --Josh H. Last edited by Jeff Darby; 21st August 2011 at 05:09 PM. I should add that these are located at Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. I don't have close-ups of the leaves because these are taken at night and I didn't think about taking those photos. Thanks again, --Josh

Since eastern redcedar, Juniperus virginiana L., is technically a juniper you you can't go wrong any more than the misnomer of the common epithet. In your area eastern redcedar is likely and the form agrees with that more than common juniper, and much more than creeping juniper. Since there was no j in Latin this would make the j is silent in the genus pronunciation, but since there are no living native speakers the point is mute.

The foliage looks to be more round with pointed or blunt ends (juniperus) than the flatter foliage of white cedar (Thuja)

Thanks for the replies. So I would assume that to call them juniper's would be safe? |

yes - safe and very likely correct. (Need a closeup of foliage to be sure)
