Default East Texas Shrub ID please

Hi everyone! I just joined your community as a result of much confusion over trying to identify a little shrub (or young tree?) that I found on my property, and the resulting frustration of the countless, useless ID keys on google. Nothing has helped so far, so I think it's time for some intelligent input, if you all don't mind.

LOCATION: East Texas; Zone 8. Very humid, hot. Found growing in shade in extremely clay-heavy soil. Apparently flowers in late winter/early spring, but I did not see the flowers, just the fruits, as of late march.
STEMS: multipule trunks, attatched below ground; branches opposite, thin, same color as trunks, but entirely smooth (trunks have papery bark). Shiny when wet. Total dimensions ~1m tall, 1/2m wide
BARK: Dark, reddish brown, attractive, smooth/papery
LEAVES: very small (2-3cm long), simple, smooth with no clearly visible veins, light green, oppositely attatched, in clusters around stem (or rather, leaves grow from buds almost like flowers, but continue as branches, almost like a rose)
FLOWERS: (unknown)
FRUIT: small, 1/2cm square or so, spade shaped, papery, light brown, typically attatched at the end of a leaf cluster on axillary buds (Also like a rose), containing a single seed, resembling a small, yellowish sunflower seed.
My camera isn't good, so the picture is probably not much help other than to give you the basic form of the plant:

I found this growing on my property, and was immediately infatuated with it. It looks like nothing else that grows on the property, so I transplanted to my garden for easier viewing =)
I worry that it may be getting too much sun for it's type, and that the soil is too poor and may need extra conditioning, thus prompting my search for an ID.

Any help is much appreciated,
Thanks.
