Default Do you know this Palm Tree?

I photographed just the trunk of this palm tree on Sanibel Island in South Florida. I have no other photos-- any idea what this is? Thank you!

Could be a Travellers Palm (Ravenala) or a Giant Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia), as opposed to an actual Palm?

Liz,

It was one of those palms that killed a 4 year old boy in Port Douglas here.

What Julie wrote about that palm.

Perhaps a recommendation you could make is that this particular species of Ravenala should never be planted, nor be allowed to remain where there is public access.

Time and time again I see this species incorporated by designers into their designs as it has such a strong architectural element, but they do not take into account that this species, whilst young looks great, eventually grows into a trunk-ed specimen that holds great weight at height and the additional weight of water held in the leaf sheaths.

This species is not suitable to be used where people regularly frequent, it should not be used in shopping centres nor car parks as I frequently observe. Existing specimens should be removed as a potential danger to the public. There are many more suitable species that can be used in the design stage that pose no future threat to public safety.

Once again my heart goes to you and the parents, such an unimaginable tragic loss, and one that could have been avoided in the initial stages of design of the plaza.

Julie
