It is cherry sized and has a stem like one, the tree is full of them and it grows in washington state, it is soft inside and has little spines on the outside.

It is a kousa dogwood, Cornus kousa Hance, and I was stumped by the first one I saw on Tree World since it was also out of context without the leaves (vein pattern) and twigs (width variation) that are so typical of dogwoods.

| Is the fruit eatable? might be a better question. If so it would be marketed as a fruit tree rather than an ornamental. Lack of eat-ability can generally include any of the following: tasteless, astringent, and/or various disagreeable textures. As a result there is a wide line between these are good to eat and those will kill you.

I appreciate the outside of the fruit is daunting to get past. But many fruits have herbal uses, but you wouldn't really want to eat many of them, I have never seen fruit on the Cornus kousas here, was just wondering if it is edible or poisonous?

| A quick search using the terms: cornus kousa edible, revealed that they probably are edible and this includes at least one cultivar 'big apple' that is marketed as a fruit tree, otherwise the eat-ability apparently varies considerably from tree to tree. It still hard to get past having always being told that something was poisonous (dogwood berries in this case) just because somebody didn't really know for sure either way. I'd still be cautious about quantity since reactions to new foods can be unpredictable besides whether or not something is healthy or poisonous in reality just depends on the dose.

The cherry is the fruit of many plants of the genus Prunus, and is a fleshy stone fruit. The cherry fruits of commerce are usually obtained from a limited number of species, including especially cultivars of the wild cherry, Prunus avium.

OK so, is this tree have anything to do with the opening post, I never knew what they are but I lived in that house for 1 year and at first I wasn't sure if I should eat then or not the the birds started ti attack it so I though to myself, if they don't kill the birds won't kill me so, I started eating then by the hand full until I couldn't eat no more. Everyday I would get under it it "pig" on those things that weren't that sweet if eaten one at the time but a big mouth full seem to go well for me. The wife didn't like them so, I had no competition as the birds didn't worry me, there was plenty for everyone. The problems was the mess on the ground that would stain everything and it seemed that the more I consumed the more I would see getting "ripe". What a great time I had with that berry tree of some nature, for 3 weeks I did visit the "dark room" toilet, more times than I dare to mention. The toilet paper for that period had increased 1000% something the wife didn't appreciate that much. Being fare, I reckon that I have just over done myself a "little" something that come wit a price as I endup with some nasty gut pains that I knew what they were related to...! ![]() So, what you guys reckon this tree is...! Cheers George |

Nyodine, you should know that birds and squirrels can eat fruit, that isn't always good for us. Have you ever tried eating Buckthorn fruit, or an acorn - they are edible too, but I wouldn't want to eat them, even under duress.

So, Lilli Pilly huh...??? I wish that someone had told me that, we come have made jam out of them cause, it got to a stage where I couldn't eat not more and you can see how much fruit production that small tree had. Yeah, I shouldn't have used the birds comment as a validation, I'm aware of lots of fruits that are from dangerous to right deadly to humans...! I did do the "general" trying type thing, buy eating only a couple and wait and see for a day or two before I went for it...! ![]() Not bullet prof but, a common practice. Cheers George |
