This is a 35 foot Acer Pseudoplatanus in the middle of a cemetery with a serious split down the centre. it has a fruiting body on either side.

wow thats a cool looking thing! I think it may be a monstrose form of a bracket fungus.
i.e. thats not its normal form, but i'm no fungologist!

Galbee, your pics show the gills but not the cap--hard to ID FROM JUST THAT. I just looked thru schwarze and luley books and saw no match.

At any rate, maybe best to cable that tree eh?

Odd, mind seeing that somewhere before but may just be confused with the infamous Morel. Cannot find match in books, closest i got was Grifola but even that is pretty far out. Will keep looking. What time of year was photo taken?

Dont now about the fungi, would need to see the sample in person! If you really need a classification send it to Forestry Commission (Alice Holt) for this.

I agree with treeseer that is a major included tension fork and i would push for a brace system to be used. Although targets and location will influence this!
Def get he LA tree officer to look at it and or further investigation!

After a little searching found this picture. I'm not convinced this is it. Its a also a species that lives on the ground. I'll do some more research

Is it Polyporus squamosus (Dryad's saddle) Galbee? Common on sycamores but not so sure about Norway maple.
