We have this tree in our backyard and I have wondered what it was for a while, the flowers are sweetly scented, and it's a familiar scent that I can't put my finger on! the original trunk has lumps like in the photo right up it, and the base is like a half buried basketball! The leaves pictured are mainly offshoots from the base, the original tree has died.

It is hard to tell if the leaves are opposite or alternate, the new shoot coming up from the base looks like opposite leaves, but hard to say! Is the thing deciduous or evergreen? Anyway, the flower looks something like that of Chimonanthus praecox. If you could get a pic of one leaflet laid flat that would be great! |
