I walk by this tree every day on my way to work (Jersey City). It has flowers, but no leaves. One is growing flowers in clusters on the main stalk of the tree where the one right next to it is not doing the same thing. Hopefully these pictures I took will help. It is breathtaking when in bloom and I would love to plant one in my yard. Thanks for your help. Lauren |

i have no idea what that is, but i do not think it is the tree. More likely a parasitic floral growth. but thats about as far as i can take it. Someone else can help from here |

Looks like a Cercis (Either Cercis canadensis or C. siliquastrum). The habit of flowering on the main trunk is called cauliflory. Wait until it sets fruit - the little pods look awesome in the breeze! P.S. Those are some great flowering examples - that looks so cool! Last edited by Bowani Siam; 4th May 2011 at 10:48 AM. Wow thanks from you both. Everyday now when I walk home people are stopped at this tree staring, talking or taking pictures. Just curious... are there things you can do to get a tree to do that cauliflory (sp) thing or is it just random? Lauren |

Saying that, some trees that flower on 'spurs' like plants in the Rosaceae family (think peaches and apples) can sometimes put flowering spurs out of the main trunk with age. A very famous cauliflorous plant is the Cannonball Tree. TrekNature | Cannon Ball Tree Photo Oooooh mama! | |

If you wait a bit longer, the tree should have leaves. THe flowers open first on Redbud, the leaves later.
