This tree has huge leaves and the fruit(?) is lightish green, I couldn't get at one so the pic of the fruit is one of a piece that has dried out a bit. The bats love this tree and it's fruit. The tree is deciduous much to my neighbors disgust as the branches seem to run horizontally out across the street and in winter the street is littered with huge leaves with those great autumn colours. Great shade in summer though. |

Sean, looked up your suggestion and I don't think that is it. I did a LOT of poking around and it took me hours but I finally found this web site http://tiny.cc/kGrxB I am certain it is a Terminalia catappa (tropical almond). I have quite a few other exotic type trees that no one seems to know anything about, well, no one from around here anyway, so I will post some more. EKKA, yes interesting block of land that is jam packed with trees that are all getting rather large. I am trying to find out what they all are to make sure they are safe and not about to fall on the house as a lot of them are pretty close. Thanks again for your help. Ok, catappa is far more common, just the leaves looked too small but I guess some variability is typical. We get both (and a few others) in the tropical north. |

Sean, I suspect its a Terminalia catappa "sea almond' as well judging by the fruit. However I agree the leaves seem a bit small. Could it be growing in the shade or with compedition from neighbouring trees. There's a nice specimen on the board walk at Coolum Beach walking up to the look out. I'm not familiar with Terminalia arenicola but I have collected seed from Terminalia sericocarpa. The fruit is smaller, more reddish purple in colour and it smells a bit like urine. Nice... ![]() ![]()
